Count coins step by step

The most reliable method is to sort coins by denomination and count from the highest value to the lowest. That reduces the number of jumps and makes the running total easier to check.

  1. 1
    Sort the coins.

    Place matching AUD coins together.

  2. 2
    Start with the highest value.

Begin with the coin that adds the largest amount.

  3. 3
    Keep a running total.

Say or write the new total after every coin.

  4. 4
    Count again to check.

Use the same order or regroup the coins a second way.

Worked AUD example: $3.85

Suppose the pile has one $2 coin, one $1 coin, one 50c, one 20c, one 10c, and one 5c. Count in value order:

$2 β†’ $3 β†’ $3.50 β†’ $3.70 β†’ $3.80 β†’ $3.85

The final total is $3.85. Australian circulating coins begin at 5c, so mixed totals move in five-cent steps.

Practise with real, play, or printed coins

Begin with one denomination, then mix two types before using a full regional set. Ask the learner to explain which coin should come first and why.

Use the Australia coin-values chart, then print the Australia counting-coins workbook. Finish with a short Cointastic practice round when an adult wants immediate feedback.
